No doubt you have seen some rather bizarre fashions from the Far East. Maybe you have done some searching on the internet or you like to browse the international channels on DIRECTV – whatever the case, you have probably seen some things you thought were strange but have you ever heard of ganguro? Crudely translated to “heavily sunburned face” this fashion trend reached its height in 2000, but what was it all about?

To understand ganguro, one must understand the characteristics and, furthermore, how they pertained to Japanese preconceived notions of beauty. A girl who practices ganguro or a “ganguro girl” usually has a very dark tan that produces an orange skin tone – usually done through make-up but sometimes accomplished through heavy tanning. Other traits include fake eyelashes, hair dyed shades of bright orange and blonde and black ink tracing lines around the eyes and lips. Doesn’t sound too appealing, does it? That’s pretty much the point. Many behavioral study specialists believe that ganguro was a rebellious attack against what the Japanese people thought beauty to be – pale skin, dark hair and unremarkable makeup.

For those of you who have been to the country, you know that Japanese culture has a tendency to both reject and rebuke anything imperfect, often times isolating these imperfections. As strange and unhealthy as ganguro might have been, it at least allowed Japanese females a chance to reject unfair expectations with regards to the ideal woman of idealized beauty, and one can certainly see the beauty in that.

Japan’s contributions to the pop culture scene have been greatly influential and tremendous. It is of no surprise that a world leader in the area of digital technology and information systems would also create new culture social groups and innovations to its traditions that the world finds lucrative and attractive. Japan’s influence of music, fashion, street fashion as well as youth culture, and adaptations to its own traditional culture has changed the view of the world. Western culture influences have placed an emphasis on Japanese culture, even at the level of retail sales and social networking. Japan’s view of adaptability has influence pretty much every aspect of Western social idealogy and even the world of work, social contact, lifestyle, and globalization. It is hard not to find anyone who is not somewhat knowledgeable of some aspect of Japanese pop culture and it is identified as being quite competitive.

Japanese pop culture continues to grow and survive because it is dependent upon constant innovation in the areas of digital progression in the computer and information systems domain. It is correlated through new influences of Western culture and the adaptability within Japanese culture itself. It becomes the same only to change once again.

The most explosive and influential cultural contributions have come from Japan. The globalization of the world through technology has placed Japanese pop culture in a place of positive scrutiny in the areas of street fashion, youth music and art culture, and lifestyle. The Japanese pop scene has a high rank being an innovator and many persons seeking to expand the concepts of clothing, music and art have traveled to Japan, studied in Japan, or made a diligent effort to learn of the innovations that take place at a rapid pace in this otherwise considered conservative culture. It is no wonder that it has risen to be a competitor in that end. The innovations of many youth cultural groups idealized by clothing, hairstyles. as well as dress and music preferences are what have been the growth of retail sales, and even new influx of cultural influence on the former cultural understanding of previous historical Japanese culture, one which has been intact for thousands of years.

What has been most challenging for the nuance of the Japanese pop culture is the consideration that is runs counter to traditional Japanese thinking. This is nothing further from the truth. The furisode has become a popular article of clothing for young women again. Traditional and modernity can meet to a positive end.

The Japanese influence on Pop Culture has been tremendous. Genres of music such as hip hop, jazz, and even classical music has been infused with the stylization of Japanese music modalities. This is clearly seen in the increase of concert dates by artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne and others as well as traditional jazz artists to include Toyko. The reason is because there is a loyal youth fan base who listen to the music, dance to the music, and most importantly, buy the music and faithfully attend concerts. The hip-hop music scene has grown on a global level attributable to the increase in popularity in European countries and Japan.

The influence of Japanese Pop Culture is also evident in fashion, dance, and advent of new range of social groups. Emp, Punk, Skate, or dozens of others are the direct contact and influence of youth culture in Japan. The evidence of new fashion iconography is expressed through Japanese designers such as Issey Miyake, and others who have made a viable influence on world fashion, as well as Japanese youth street fashion which is monitored and emulated pretty much all over the world. To a degree, Japanese pop culture stands alone and influences all.

The Japanese explosion onto the Pop Culture scene has much of the world in awe. The influence in music, dance, and even clothing and make-up stylings of Japanese young people has increased at a global level. It can be noted that new pop artists and clothing designers go on the streets of urban Japanese cities for inspiration, and even pirating of what young people are doing. And to the fact, it is all good.

Japan has long since been an incubator of culture. In itself, it is a culture of several thousands of years. The advent of the Digital Age had thrust the country into a viable competition with goods and services of Western culture, bringing innovations of new cultural influences with them. Japan was indeed ready for the influx, with many young people who were willing to try anything new. The Digital Age brought new stylings the country was hungry for, and young people immediately embraced. The uniqueness of this is that Japanese culture brings not only stability but adaptability, and the new cultural influences of Pop Culture are now a much changed and independent force in youth culture in Japan. The best words that really typify this are. “Emo, anyone?”.
